‘The Dust on the Moth’ is a novel written by Darren Simpson, and he describes it as "a sci-fi fairytale meets mundane suburban life." However, in reality, it's far more unconventional than that. Bees Make Honey Press published it in November 2015 after two years of plotting, planning, and countless cups of tea. Initially, I was brought in to design the cover, but I quickly found myself tasked with illustrating it, laying out the final body copy, and even composing an accompanying soundtrack inspired by the story. Naturally, I accepted, as I found such an abstract and challenging concept too intriguing to pass up.
A significant portion of the book is set in an old, crumbling Victorian house, and I aimed to capture its slightly grubby, well-lived-in atmosphere through the illustrations. Ultra-clean and unmistakably digital images would not have been suitable at all, so adding a touch of "surface noise" allowed the images to blend seamlessly with the text.
The book is truly exceptional, and someone should definitely consider adapting it into a film
“This book is unique, the result of an author’s unfretted talent at work and play. It rings with intrigue and unease. As it is impossible to describe The Dust on the Moth in one word, I’ll give you seven: Experimental. Rich. Creative. Political. Philosophical. Fantastical. Visual.”
